Yeshuʿa ben Sira was a Jerusalem sage of the early part of the 2nd century BCE who compiled a Hebrew book of proverbs, combining contemporary wisdom with Torah traditions. His book was mentioned in rabbinic literature but it was his grandson's Greek translation that formed the basis for the text adopted as canonical by the Early Church. Since 1896, much of the Hebrew text has been reconstructed from numerous Genizah fragments.
