David Kaufmann was trained at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau and taught as professor at the rabbinical seminary in Budapest. He became one of the most brilliant scholars and communicators of the Academic Study of Judaism (Wissenschaft des Judentums) in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. His outstanding collection of medieval manuscripts and incunabula is preserved until today as "Kaufmann Collection" in the Oriental Department of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest.
