Leopold Zunz (1794, Detmold - 1886, Berlin) was a German-Jewish philologist. He was a founding member of the Verein für Cultur und Wissenschaft der Juden (Kulturverein) and one of the first advocates for the development of a field of Jewish Studies, preferably within the context of the university. Adopting the views and methods of the German academy, Zunz studied the historical development of synagogal liturgies, and moreover called others to follow his example in order to make the rich history of Jewish literature accessible.
