The Yiddish verse novel Bovo d’Antona which became known under the name Bobe-Mayse (also Bove-Mayse or Bove-Bukh) was written in 1507/1508 and printed in Isny in 1541. In the late 18th century, after several edits and new editions, it enjoyed enormous popularity as a prose novel, being particularly popular among Jewish women and girls in Eastern Europe. The title Bobe-Mayse, which has been used since the 19th century, was then mistranslated as "grandmother's tale" – a combination of the words bobe (grandmother) und mayse (tale).
