The so-called cosmopolitan persecution marked the last phase of Stalinist policy towards the Jews in the Soviet Union between 1948 and 1953. The term "cosmopolitan" was a disparaging attribution, which was virtually used as a synonym for all non-Russians. At the height of the campaign, the denunciation was directed against Jewish theatre critics in particular, with the label of "rootless cosmopolitans."
