The illustrated monthly journal Ost und West, published in Berlin from 1901 until 1923, conveyed a specific Jewish self-understanding to its German-speaking Jewish readership. It contrasted a Jewish heritage that was still alive amongst Eastern European Jews with the pressure of and openness to assimilation.
