For nearly two millennia, Jewish communities have dotted the North African coastline that constitutes present-day Tunisia. Medieval manuscripts refer to Jewish quarters and markets established in Tunis/Carthage, but also in the urban centers of Jerba, Sousse, Mahdia, Monastir, Gabes, Bizerte, and Sfax.
