Mordecai ha-Kohen was born in 1856 in Tripoli, Libya, where his grandfather, a Genovese, had settled to escape the Napoleonic wars. His father died in a shipwreck off Crete in 1861, leaving the family impoverished. Ha-Kohen received a traditional Jewish education, but also imbibed Italian culture and acquired extensive knowledge as an autodidact. He worked at teaching Hebrew, repairing watches, and peddling.
