Samuel (Shelomo) Rahbarwas born in 1929 into an educated family in Hamadan, Iran. Like most Iranian Jews in his time, he received his early education in the Alliance Israélite Universelle school system and then at the Pahlavi High School. Inspired by a brother who was a chemistry teacher, he entered the Faculty of Medicine at Tehran University, graduating in 1953. From then until 1960 he worked in Abadan and Tehran.
