Intensive Mongolic–Slavic contacts started in the 13th century, as Turco-Mongolian troops led by Mongolian rulers invaded Eastern Europe. The Mongolian warriors spoke Middle Mongolian, and their contacts with locals brought a set of loanwords into East Slavic languages, mostly into Russian.
