Education: Colonial and Missionary: Sub-Saharan Africa: West Africa

Christian missionaries introduced Western education as early as the 1850s in West Africa. Access was first made available to boys, and only later to girls when it was realized that the education of women was an obvious bridge to evangelizing the home and remolding society along Christian principles.
