Modern Turkish higher education started in 1924 with the eradication of the religious education of the Ottoman Empire and the foundation of the Republic of Turkey (CEPES 1990, Hatipo'lu 2000). Medreses, religious colleges, were replaced by contemporary secular universities and the use of Arabic and Persian by the Latin alphabet as the medium of written and oral communication.
