Rural-to-urban labor migration has been a major phenomenon in Turkey in the past half century. The first three population censuses of the Turkish Republic in 1927, 1940, and 1950 show a steady ratio of the rural population at three-quarters of the total population; from then onwards there is a rapid decrease in the ratio of the rural population down to only one-third of the total population according to the 2000 census.
