Muslim women have played a major role in creating awqāf (sing. waqf, called ḥubus in North Africa), endowments for charitable or family purposes. Waqf is thus one of the basic sites where Muslim women's socioeconomic and political history can be investigated. Women's waqf reflects a Muslim woman's economic right in Sharīʿa law to own and dispose of her property.
