Muslim-majority populations are found across the Sahel from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean: Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Sudan and Somalia. Their low level of medicalization is explained by poverty even by Sub-Saharan African standards (except for Senegal), low levels of urbanization and female education, and the remote inland location of most of them.
