Abstract

This entry offers a historical overview of women in Egyptian theater, beginning with their emergence as performers in the nineteenth century; their input as playwrights and directors began to emerge in Egypt only as late as the 1950s. The entry then gives brief accounts of the careers of the best known female theater professionals in Egypt up to the present.
