[56c] The essence and core of the royal forces were the 12,000 troopers of the ghulam squadrons. Most of them were either Mongol (Hazarah) or Qizilbash. A minority were from other ethnic groups. Ahmad Shah brought the Qizilbash from Iran to Afghanistan and gave them the designation “ghulams of the house.” Up to Shah Zaman’s time, they were relatively few in number.
