The project to translate Sirāj al-tawārīkh began in the late autumn of 1967. I had just graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor’s degree in Oriental Studies and had been awarded a Fulbright fellowship to go to Afghanistan to research the reign of Amir ʿAbd al-Rahman Khan.
