In 1620, Prince ErnstI of Schaumburg succeeded in obtaining from Emperor FerdinandII the privilege of a university for the academy that he had founded in 1610 in Stadthagen. The university was moved to Rinteln, where it was granted secularized monastic property, and the four faculties of the “Ernestina” were able to begin their teaching in 1621.
