(1465 [?] – 1543), Mvemba Nzinga, son of Nzinga Nkuvu, who was king of the Congo (Kongo Kingdom) when the Portuguese first arrived there in the 1480s. At the time Congo was a considerable and prosperous state. Nzinga Nkuvu was baptized in 1491 like many other African kings on encountering the Portuguese. He received the name of João I.
