After the dissolution of the Universities of Duisburg, Cologne, Mainz, Münster, Paderborn and Trier and the occupation of the Rhineland by Prussia in the spring of 1815, a common university, oriented toward confessional parity, was founded in Bonn on Oct 18, 1818 for the western Prussian provinces of the Rhineland and Westphalia. In the summer semester of 1996, the University had eight faculties with a total of 35,537 students, including 641 Protestant, 459 Catholic and 15 Old Catholic theologians. The first…
