Charlemagne commissioned Willehad, an Anglo-Saxon, to evangelize the lower Weser. Willehad built a wooden church in Bremen, consecrated in 789. The first bishop was Willerich (804/805), who built the stone cathedral (rebuilt in 1042). In 848 Louis the German gave the see to Ansgar, the archbishop of Hamburg, who was fleeing the Normans, thus giving birth to the archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremen…
