(May 25, 1818, Basel – Aug 8, 1897, Basel). In 1837, he commenced his studies in theology in Basel. During W.M.L. de Wette's lectures he developed fundamental doubts concerning the support of biblical beliefs in revelation and he discontinued his studies. From 1839 to 1843, he studied history and art history under, among others, L. Ranke and J.G. Droysen in Berlin. In 1855, Die Zeit Constantins des Großen appeared, followed by Der Cicerone in 1855.
