Founded on Dec 16, 1870 by previously enslaved African American members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the south of America, the denomination was called Colored Methodist Episcopal Church from 1870 to 1956. It adopted the organization and theology of mainstream American Methodism, except for a stipulation that church property not be used for political and civil rights actions during the “Reconstruction Period” (1865–1877).
