was the first historically attested bishop of the city (189–231/232 ce). He commenced the systematic development of the organization of the Egyptian church. In Alexandria he pursued the connection between the so-called Catechetical School, a philosophical Christian school, to the church. In 203 ce he made the young Origen (in succession of Clement of Alexandria) head of the school.
