Son of a pastor and court chaplain, Dilthey studied theology, philosophy, history, and classical philology in Heidelberg and Berlin. Dilthey received his doctorate in philosophy in Berlin with a dissertation on F.D.E. Schleiermacher's ethics (1864), completing his Habilitation there in the same year with a study in moral philosophy.
