(Jul 6, 1808, Treptow – Jun 19, 1884, Berlin) studied philology and philosophy in Berlin beginning in 1826, gaining a doctorate in 1831; his Habilitation followed two years later. In 1840, he was appointed to a chair of history in Kiel. He taught at Jena from 1851 and in Berlin from 1859 until his death. Shaped from youth by enlightened theology, neo-humanism and the spirit of the Prussian reform period, he devoted himself to ancient history as a disciple of Sachphilologie (the “philology of facts”), especially during his first period in Berlin.
