After studying theology, Dutoit became active in Lausanne as a Reformed pastor, but abandoned this post after a few weeks. Illness and his engagement with the writings of the mystic J.M. de la Motte Guyon led him to a reclusive lifestyle wherein he could devote himself entirely to his work as an author.
