The term edification (“building up”) in its metaphorical religious sense was introduced by the NT (Gk οἰκοδομή/oikodomē, Lat. aedificatio). It denotes a central aspect of ecclesiology (Church) involving the interplay between the part and the whole. Despite both the deficient and inflationary senses the word has taken on in modern usage, its original, precise sense is vital for theological reflection on the church and the local congregation.
