Since its first major formulation by S. Kierkegaard (as in Romanticism), existence philosophy has directed its attention against the overdrawn claims of speculative systematic philosophy. In many respects, its procedures resemble those of Socrates (and also of the Cynics). Modern precursors were, among others, B. Pascal, J.G. Hamann and, F.H.
