Francke grew up in a religious atmosphere shaped by Johann Arndt's Wahres Christentum and English edifying literature. In Gotha, where his father accepted an appointment as court counselor in 1666, he became acquainted with the ecclesiastical, educational, and social reforms put in place by Ernest the Pious in his territory.
