“Gaul” comprised the the Roman jurisdictions of Galliae and Viennensis (Provence to the mouth of the Rhine), including 17 provinces and 155 cities according to the Notitia Galliarum. The earliest literary reference to Christian communities is Eusebius, Hist. eccl. V, 1–5, which speaks of persecution of Christians in Lyon and Vienne in the year 177. Irenaeus (Haer. I, 10.2) speaks of Christians “in the Germanies” and Tertullian (Adversus Iudaeos 7) mentions “diverse nations of Gaul” that had become Christian, but the exact geographical reference is…
