(Apr 1, 1776, Hanau – Jul 25, 1853, Lübeck), influential revival preacher and reformer in Lübeck, who became doctor of theology in Berlin in 1817. Turning from a devout Enlightenment (II, 4.c) to a christocentric theology of religious experience and revelation (emphasis on grace, faith, and rebirth from 1807 on) – and under the influence of F.D.E. Schleiermacher, F.H. Jacobi, and G. Menken – Geibel combined Romanticism and Idealism with biblicism and religious nationalism.
