The site of today's old city of Geneva on a height south of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva) was already occupied in pre-historic times. The advantageous geographical situation destined the city from the outset to be a commercial site of the first order: wares could be transported over the lake and further via the Rhône to southern France and the Mediterranean region.
