The Goths, who split into Ostrogoths and Visigoths after the invasion of the Huns at the end of the 4th century, settled initially (like many other Iron-Age Germanic tribes) in marginal areas of northern and eastern Europe; later they settled within the Roman Empire, where they were renowned for their military victories.
