The Georgia Augusta was founded in 1737 as a university for the electorate of Hannover, which was tied to England by personal union. During its first decades, its conception and for-tunes were determined by the Hannoverian minister Gerlach Adolph Freiherr von Münchhausen. State dominance persisted also after this period.
