Hegel was the eldest of the three children born to the treasury secretary Georg Ludwig Hegel and his wife Maria Magdalena Luise née Fromm. He attended the Stuttgart Gymnasium, which was conducted in the spirit of the Enlightenment, and developed a strong interest in Latin, Greek, and mathematics.
