Preaching preceded its theory, homiletics. The first attempts to frame a theory of preaching were those of John Chrysostom (περὶ ἱεροσύνης/perí hierosýnēs) and Augustine of Hippo (Doctr. chr.), who built on con-¶ temporary rhetoric.
