(Feb 4, 1895, Zuffenhausen, near Stuttgart – Jul 7, 1973, Nürnberg) was the only son of the Jewish textile manufacturer Moritz (Moses) Horkheimer. He studied, with Friedrich Pollock, philosophy, psychology, and national economy in Munich, Frankfurt am Main, and Freiburg im Breisgau. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Frankfurt in 1922, completed his habilitation there in 1925 and became a Privatdozent in philosophy.
