(Hozjusz, Stanisław; May 5, 1504, Cracow – Aug 5, 1579, Capranica near Rome). Following humanistic studies in Cracow and studies in jurisprudence in Padua and Bologna (Dr. jur. in 1534), Hosius worked in the Royal Polish Chancellery. He became a priest in 1543, bishop of Kulm in 1549, and royal emissary to King Ferdinand I and Emperor Charles V. Appointed bishop of Ermland in 1551, he was summoned to Rome in 1558, officiated as nuncio in Vienna, became cardinal in 1561, and was papal legate at the Council of Trent from 1561 to 1563.
