(Apr 26, 1711, Edinburgh – Aug 25, 1776, Edinburgh). Hume spent his youth in Scotland, acquiring considerable literary and philosophical training through self-study. He spent several years in France, where he wrote his main philosophical work, the Treatise of Human Nature (1739/40).
