The “Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel” was established in 1665, after the end of the Thirty Years War, in a former Franciscan monastery of the city. It is thus one of the late princely university foundations that began in the mid-15th century. Its motto Pax optima rerum indicates that the memory of wartime perils was still fresh and that the fostering of peace was of paramount importance.
