The Kongo Kingdom (Central West Africa) was founded around the 12th century and was already established and very powerful in the 14th century. Its king, the Mweni Kongo, ruled an area stretching south of the lower Kongo through to the Atlantic coast of present-day Angola and the western regions of the present-day Democratic Republic of Congo.
