(May 9, 1849, Schwöbber, near Hameln – Oct 15, 1918, Münster). From 1867 to 1871, Nelle studied Protestant theology at Halle (where he also studied music) and Tübingen. He began his ministry with the Inland Mission in 1872, as parish minister and superintendent, moving to Hamm in 1886. In 1905 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Breslau. After retiring in 1916, he was appointed professor at the University of Münster, where he taught hymnology and liturgical studies. Nelle was the author of fundamental works on hymnology.
