At the beginning of the 11th century, the Kaiserburg of Nürnberg (first mentioned in 1050) was built as the core of a burggravate. The surrounding settlement was granted market privileges in 1062 and was granted city status in 1200. In the Middle Ages, it belonged ecclesiastically to the dioceses of Bamberg and Eichstätt.
