Son of Theodor Adolph Philipp Schwarz (1777–1850), a pastor and writer, Schwarz studied theology at Halle, Bonn, Berlin, and Greifswald, finishing in 1836. A member of the student league at Halle and Berlin, in 1838 he served a six-month sentence in Wittenberg for his political views, during which he was able to attend the Wittenberg seminary.
