(1511, Villanueva de Sijena, Aragon – Oct 17, 1553, Geneva), natural philosopher, theologian, and physician. His father Antonio was a notary in Villanueva. As a child, he suffered a severe injury to his genitals, leaving him impotent and resulting in physical and mental suffering. At the age of 14, he entered the service of the Franciscan Juan de Quintana (died 1547), who made it possible for him to study law at Toulouse (1528/1529).
