In the context of the national economy, the service sector includes all areas of economic activity that do not produce material goods – in other words, everything but industry, agriculture, mining, energy, and construction. More particularly, it includes wholesale and retail trade, transportation, mail and telecommunications, banking and insurance, rental housing,and other service industries (catering, education, culture, health care, etc.), as well as government. Thus the service sector may be defined either negatively or enumeratively.
