(Sep 11, 1910, Basel – Nov 3, 1993, Wabern, Bern). After studying theology and Assyriology in Basel, Neuchâtel, Marburg, and Leipzig, Stamm received a doctorate in both fields. From 1949 to 1976 he taught at Bern as professor of Old Testament (to 1960 also of the history of religions); from 1960 to 1980 he was also responsible for ancient Near Eastern languages.
