1. City.

The site was settled even before the Romans. The original urban core grew out of the Roman castellumArgentorate; in the time of Augustus, it had 5,000/ 6,000 inhabitants. The Alemanni, who took the town from the Romans in 406, renamed it: Gregory of Tours (6th cent.) called it Stradeburg. Taken by Attila in 451, it continued to grow: 20,000 inhabitants in the late 13th century, 26,481 in 1697, 49,948 in 1789, and 272,975…
